Close is a Scottish word for a small alleyway. These closes lead off it to the north and south from the Royal Mile and are used nowadays as short cuts to get to Cowgate or Market street.
The close that runs along our building is called Barry’s Close, but there used to be another close running along side Barry’s close. Our building is built right on top of this “Lost Close” and today we have daily events taking place in this historic space.
